Dhaka--(UNB) – Managing Director of the World Bank group Shengman Zhang expressed satisfaction over Bangladesh’s achievements in various sectors, including agriculture, education and health.


His appreciation came in a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Ganobhaban residence yesterday(Wednesday).


Zhang observed macroeconomic management is essential for the Bangladesh government for further progress.


The visiting World Bank managing director informed the Prime Minister of the meetings he had with the Finance Minister and other high officials of Bangladesh government.


The Prime Minister said her government’s main focus is on poverty alleviation and it achieved remarkable success in very short period in various socioeconomic sectors.


“We have given emphasis on democracy without which economic progress cannot be achieved,” she told the donor agency boss, who is here to have a first-hand view of development schemes financed by them.


Hasina said the government initiated various reforms in various sectors, including the banking sector, and restored discipline in the financial sector.


“Despite droughts, cyclones and floods, the government could maintain a healthy growth rate of over 5.5 percent.”


She said the government had provided agricultural inputs, including fertilizer and loans, to the farmers that resulted in the success in agriculture sector.


“We want that the purchasing power of the rural people be increased and for this we have taken adequate steps, including development of infrastructure and power generation,” the PM apprised the WB MD.


Principal Secretary to the PM Dr SA Samad and ERD Secretary Dr Masihur Rahman were present.
